Hedgerow Poetry Self-Study Workshop

The hedgerow is a mixed hedge of rough shrubs and trees, habitat for countless species of insects, birds and mammals and an invaluable carbon sink, potentially a vital tool for tackling the climate emergency. But the hedgerow is also an idea. It is the boundary marker between town and country, a line between human civility and the feral wilderness beyond…

Part ecopoetry workshop, part celebration of the seasons, this self-study workshop is an active exploration of the hedgerow – as history, fact and idea – writing new short poems rooted in an untamed world.

How it works

After you have signed up to the workshop, you will be sent a reading pack with prompts and ideas to spark new writing. You can go at your own pace, doing all the prompts together in one go (up to 2 days' writing) or space them out over time - enjoy as you wish. The reading pack will be sent within 24 hours, probably sooner (this is to account for different time zones as the pack is sent manually).

Everyone who signs up for this self-study course will be invited to contribute to Dialect's annual anthology.

Suitable for all writers, from absolute beginners to those with some experience who would like to get some words on the page around this fascinating topic.

The workshop is written by writer, poet and Director of Dialect JLM Morton.
